Computer Aided Design (CAD)

  Hi readers! We were tasked to design a keychain with our name as a recap of our previous Fusion360 lessons and familiarize ourselves with Fusion360 functions. We had to follow the steps in this video.




 

The first step is to create a sketch and select a plane. I have selected create a sketch shown on the first arrow and clicked on the point on the 2nd arrow. I have selected the top plane shown on the top right corner.


The second step is to draw a rectangle (65mm x 25mm). I clicked the rectangle sketch on the 3rd arrow and start the sketch of the rectangle on the 4th arrow. I change the dimensions of the rectangle to 65mm x 25mm as shown in the 5th and 6th arrow.


The third step is to select the offset option, click on the rectangle and offset the sketch by 2mm. I have clicked on the offset option on the 7th arrow and clicked on the rectangle in the 8th arrow. After that, I changed the offset to -2mm. 



The fourth step is to fillet the corners of the keychain with a 5mm radius. I clicked on the fillet option on the 9th arrow and fillet each corners. Subsequently, I changed the fillet to 5mm radius.

The 5th step is to create a line for the keychain hole. I used the line sketch function on the 10th arrow and drew a line on the keychain shown on the 11th arrow. After that, I proceed to right click on the line and select normal/construction shown in the 2nd picture. Subsequently, I select dimension and click on both lines to define a 7mm distance between them.




The 6th step is to create a point in the middle of the line and draw a 5mm circle from the point.

I selected the point function under create and used it to create a point in the middle of the line and used the circle sketch on the point and made a 5mm circle.

The 7th step is to create my name on my keychain. I used the text function under create and made a textbox. After that, I inserted my name and align it in the keychain design.

Now, I have finished my design of the keychain and I clicked complete sketch. I used the extrude function on the base by 3mm without selecting the hole.

The last step is to extrude the name of the keychain. I hide the bodies from the browser and show your sketch and selected the border and the name to extrude by 1.5mm. I selected offset plane from the extrude menu and entered 3mm. After this I finally completed my keychain!

Reflection:

The first tutorial helped me to practice and train my Fusion 360 skills. I  was not very confident and as skillful from last semester compared to this semester. This tutorial is important for me to get better at my Fusion 360 skills and also recap on what I did last semester in Fusion 360. I had to watch a video about designing a name tag and follow step by step the actions provided and design a similar name tag with my name in Fusion 360. I think that Fusion 360 is an important skill in the future because this software is very useful in creating a prototype and for future projects and since technology is advancing very fast, I believe that humans should also evolve and adapt to use these types of software to stay relevant in the future. Practicing Fusion 360 once a while is important, as humans tend to forget after a short period of time and documenting helps to remind and teach myself how to do Fusion 360 if I ever forget.


Laser cutting CAD

 

 

In this page, I will be showing you the steps to creating my among us phone stand!

I have been tasked to design a handphone stand for my laser cutting practical.

Before coming up with the idea of an among us phone stand, I searched through many websites, images and videos for inspirational ideas.


 

The first step I did was to set the parameters for my design. I decided to make it 130mm by 80mm with a thickness of 5mm. By doing this, I am making my design parametric in Fusion 360.

The second step was to create a sketch.

The third step was to create a rectangle with the dimensions of the length which is 130mm and the width which is 80mm.

The fourth step was to create a circle in the middle of the rectangle to be our among us head.

The fifth step was to trim the semi circle in the rectangle.

6. I created a rectangle (40mm x 25mm) in the middle of the among us character using the rectangle sketch. This will be our among us character's eyes.

7.  I used the fillet function and fillet the corners of the rectangle in the semicircle and rectangle to 5mm.

    

8. I created a rectangle so that the 2nd piece which supports the stand can slide in the phone stand to function which is 40mm x 5mm.

9. I created a square 80mm x 80mm which will be our support for the phone stand.

10. I created a rectangle in the support so that it is able to slide into the phone stand which is 40mm x 5mm.

11. I decided to add a phone charger port to make it more useful which is a rectangle in the middle of the support 20mm x 14mm.

12. Next, I trim the side of the rectangle for the slotting and the phone charging port.

13. Next, I fillet the insides of the slot to 3mm.

14. I fillet the charging port of the support to 5mm.

15. I fillet the corners of the support and the phone stand. 10mm for the corners of the support and 15mm for the phone stand.

16. Next, I decided to finish sketch and extrude the phone stand to ply which is 5mm.

17. After that, I extrude the support to ply which is 5mm.

18. I decided to change it to the colour of the among us character, red as decoration.

19. I need to make both the items into components so that I am able to attach both of it together.

20. Lastly, I assemble them together using the assemble function and I am done!

Reflection:

From this CAD, I struggled a lot making a parametric design because compared to just designing and modelling it directly, making a parametric phone stand makes it way harder in Fusion360. I was also very frustrated with the software because certain features made me struggle and not going the way I want it to go. However, making it parametric made me realised that, it saves me time and effort to having remember the dimensions and making it more organised in the process. Besides learning how to use the parameters for parametric deisgn in Fusion360, I had also learnt how to create components and combine them. From this learning experience, I will be able to utilise the skills that I learnt for future projects such as laser cutting parametric designs, final year project. Overall, Im happy that Im working towards my personal goal of getting better at Fusion 360 and this was a fun yet frustrating lesson for me and I look forward to using more Fusion 360 for more CAD.
